1. Soweto Tour

The sprawling township of Soweto outside Johannesburg is a mix of friendly people, humble heroes and moving history. It’s the place to learn about South Africa’s road to democracy - where else in the world would you find the homes of two Nobel Peace prize winners (Mandela and Tutu) in the same street? As Soweto holds out its welcoming arms to you, you can witness its vibrant urban African culture and absorb its penchant for jazz music and shebeen (tavern) socialising. It’s a township of contrasts - high-tech, informative museums alongside bustling informal markets; middle class suburbs adjacent to squatter camps. Sample the local phutu pap (maize accompaniment) and stew washed down with a locally brewed beer. After your tour of SOWETO return to your hotel via a Johannesburg City drive.

The regal Lipizzaner horses have long been a South African favourite. A small group was rescued from war-torn Austria in 1944, and brought to South Africa by Count Jankovich-Besan. Originally of Spanish origin, the Lipizzaner is born dark and its coat lightens over the years to a silvery white. The few that remain black or bay are highly prized.
